I purchased the 2021 ironman level 1 run hr and bike power program which I began on May 10th- about 20 weeks into the schedule I am doing a sprint distance for fun with my family on Sept 26th. Instead of an ironman two weeks later I’m actually just running a marathon on October 9th. I decided to try the ironman schedule to see how I can handle that kind of training with lupus – this year is kind of an experiment overall. Should I adjust that week at all for the sprint race? Or as its such a short distance and my training that day is a lot longer just go with the week as planned.

    Thanks!!

    Anastasia,

I love your attitude: “I’ll just try out IM-Level training to see what it’s like.” Next up: “I think I’ll get a law degree just for the experience…”

Yes, you can dramatically decrease your training the week of the Sprint. Cut it back to maybe 6 total hours, 1.5 running 3 biking and 1.5 swimming.

Technically, you are correct, it is such a short distance that you don’t have to change anything. If you really don’t’ care about the result, don’t’ change a thing. If you add a light taper, you’ll do better.

    David,

HAHAHAHA – Well Lupus is tricky and if I also had the pressure of an Ironman race while I was trying to figure out any new triggers for a lupus flare for this load of training – I’d definitely have some issues. I have to say though – so far I’m adapting well – in week 7 and I’ve only missed two days – one on which I was totally wiped and had my monthly lupus IV treatment and the other was a family event. I’m definitely not fast and my HR has me walking a lot but I’m still progressing safely and that’s what’s most important to me. Thanks for your feedback for my sprint week. I’m going to see how I feel. I may just opt to operate at the lower end of my HR zones that week and keep it going.

Thanks again! (also no law degree for experience in my future)
