Can’t catch a break

Do you ever have those training cycles where you can’t seem to catch a break? After my scheduled 2 week running break in December, I was making good progress, until I ended up with covid in January. It wasn’t that bad, but it did set me back some. However, I was at least able to get back to where I left off. But then I ended up with an ingrown hair that really got infected. I had to have a doctor work on it. Because of the unfortunate location and the incision, I’m not supposed to run for a week.

Good grief! I’ve been great with strength training and injury prevention, but I keep getting derailed by other things. But I guess a week shouldn’t set me back that bad. Sorry, I just had to rant. All done. Hope your week is going well!

Sometimes we all need a good rant! The worst thing is to repress these feelings and diminish them. Hopefully this will be a minor setback for you and will actually serve a purpose to refresh and re-motivate.

This was my fall. August and the first part of September were going great. I was on track to PR my October marathon (A race) or December marathon (B race).
Late September – broke a toe (while on a run), had to take a week off and then take it easy the next week.
October – marathon is cancelled due to security threats (MCM in DC); still did a 6 hour race locally, but it didn’t go great, so I took a week off afterwards for recovery
November – COVID Booster hits me HARD and I’m off for most of a week (plus two trips this month took a dent in planned training)
December – dog bite on my calf (while on a run), marathon is cancelled due to tornadoes (Rocket City in Huntsville).

Thankfully, it all started to fall back into place and I’m been lucky to have been consistently training since just before Christmas. Even with an ankle sprain in January, I was still able to keep training and did my first 50 miler this past weekend and it went great.

Thanks Brian! I was actually able to use a heavy duty waterproof bandage and complete all of my runs this week. It didn’t irritate the incision at all. Yesterday, I went to the doctor for a follow up, and they said that everything looks great.

Boss – That’s a rough season you went through! Sorry to hear about all of that. But I’m glad to hear that you’re doing better now and that your 50 miler went well!
