Is there a place in 80/20 for fasted Workouts along the lines of this?

Yes. You can do any recovery week long ride or run as a fasted session. Some of our 2021 edition half-marathon, marathon, and ultramarathon plans have fasted runs built in.

Hi Matt. Thanks. You say recovery week long runs and rides are ok for a fasted workout. Why not any easy Z1-Z2 run or ride, on any week?

You can do that. There’s just more to be gained from combining carbohydrate restriction with workouts that are either long enough or intense enough to result in a high level of glycogen depletion.

Got it. Thanks. And doing a workout fasted vs not fasted doesn’t impact intensity distribution and the training impact on the body? In other words, doing long Z1-2 runs fasted instead of unfasted doesn’t make them harder on the body and require longer recovery or a shift in the 80/20 calculations?

Fasted workouts are more stressful. That’s the whole idea. But they are more stressful in much the same way training at altitude is. In the case of altitude, you train precisely the same way you would at sea level, just a little slower. In the case of fasted workouts, you just need to ease into doing them and avoid overdoing them. Everything else stays the same.
