    Hello,

Hoping someone can offer some guidance. I was supposed to travel to Ireland for IM cork. The race was on August 14th. After that, I was going to take 2 weeks of active recovery and then repeat the last couple of weeks for Kona – it only would have been one, maybe two long rides/runs.

However, I got Covid on July 29th, I had one last long bike ride, then was going to enter taper town (obviously the long bike did not happen). I was able to return to play pretty quickly (not sure how smart that was, but here we are). I started to follow the tapering plan because, in my mind, I was still going to compete in Ireland. My husband and I decided to cancel the trip on August 8th (we didn’t speak for 24 hours). So, then I backdated the training plan for 2 full months, and am going through all of the long rides and runs again. Is it smart to repeat the last two months? Or, should I be doing something else? Just keep plucking along?

    Divitoca,
This is a tricky situation with having peaked for IM Cork, then getting sick, and then having to ramp up again for Kona. The cleanest way is to cycle back through that last block of training again, but I would say to account for any COVID lingering issues and what sounds like a bit of a stressful period stay on the lower end of your zones and drop the volume down slightly if needed to stay consistent and feeling healthy and strong. Kona is a race that many people over train for – the healthiest strongest and most confident athletes tend to be the ones that have a good day on the big island.

Good Luck and keep us updated

Thanks so much for the reply!

I am using the Level 3 Ironman training plan – should I drop to level 2?

I would only recommend dropping back if you are not able to complete and/or recovery from your workouts after 1-2 weeks of consistency.

Thanks so much, so far, I’ve been able to maintain the demands of the level 3, so, onward I go! I appreciate the advice and guidance very much.
