I acquired a MTB recently after solely doing road cycling for past 15 years.

My A race and priority is still triathlons but I’d like to mix it up with a MTB ride to keep things fresh.

Is it as easy as just swapping out one of the Tri cycling workouts with a similar time on the trail? Any point or situation where MTB would be detrimental I should be aware of (eg within a month of triathlon? Or something like that?).

I’m currently in week 12 of the Sprint Tri level 2 plan.

    Thanks!

MTB can be a really fun option! Only considerations are the trails you choose in terms of how technical they are. If you get on a trail that has a lot of poppy climbs you may end up with more of an interval type workout, and if you are swapping that session with a more steady state workout on your plan, this would change the intent of the session and if you did that frequently enough may increase your exposure to moderate to high intensity. If the trails you choose are flowy and you can keep your intensity fairly steady then it can be a great addition to your training. I personally encourage MTB rides on transition weeks to allow some time for fun when the volume is reduced. You will also still ride for time, rather than distance on the trails..
