IT Band Injury – Ironman A Race in 7 Weeks

    I have a friend who’s IT Band has flared up, and now is unable to run. He is going to PT to help strengthen it, and is cutting the running in the meantime as he recovers. He cant run more than 5 minutes without pain… so any running is out. Our plan is for him to rehab and recovery so he can possibly jog somewhat for his A Race at the end of July…
    Looking for guidance for what to do instead of the run work-outs. I Was thinking to tell him to bike it instead, but that can mean a lot of bike volume.  so figured I should get confirmation



    That’s too bad about the IT issue flaring up!   The IT band is always difficult to treat and certainly requires patience.

    My rule of thumb when someone has to stop running for any number of reasons, is this: We take half of the run mileage and add it to the bike, and take the other half to the pool for aqua jogging.   For example if you have a 10 mile run planned, you would ride the bike (zone 1) for 5 miles and then aqua jog for the same amount of time it would take you to run 5 miles on the road.
