Long run indoor bike alternatives

    As winter starts to take a hold running outdoors on icy roads becomes less practical and more dangerous!

    Are there any suggestions for a replacing the usual Sunday long run with an indoor trainer ride?  Should it just be a similar length endurance ride or a shorter sweet spot/tempo type ride or anything else in between?

    Any suggestions welcome.

    I assume that you are both a runner and cyclist. I personally don’t think that they are very interchangeable except for the cardio fitness part. If you think of the three parts of a triathlon being similar efforts, the ride to run distance ratio is 4 to 1, and the time ratio around 1.5 – 2 to 1.


    It would depend if you are training for an event, in a maintenance phase, what type of event you are training for etc.

    If you are training for a long running event, then the long run is key for building endurance, practicing nutrition, etc.   If you are in a maintenance phase and not training for an event, then you can interchange the run for a long bike since you aren’t training for a specific race.
