Long runs – 100 mile plan

    I was reading Matt’s article https://www.8020endurance.com/at-what-point-do-long-runs-transition-from-training-to-punishment/ where he advocates the 35 mile rule i.e. not run farther than 35 miles while preparing for a 100 mile race. However, he also writes in the same article “ If you want to be at your best both physically and psychologically for a 100-miler, consider doing a 50-miler eight to twelve weeks before it.”. So i just want to know if Matt is advising to cap longest training runs at 35 miles or at 50 miles?

    Hi Rahoolj,
    I think what Matt was referring to with the 50 miler was to add in a 50 mile event 8 weeks out from your 100 miler. You would probably do a short taper and recovery from this event but can be a great confidence and fitness booster for the 100 mile race. Lets you try out race conditions and fueling etc. If not doing a 50 mile event and following the plan then 35 milers with consistency in your weekly mileage will build the fitness.

    Thanks for sharing! There’s a 50 miler/100k exactly 12 weeks out from my 100 miler. My plan only calls for a 3 hour run that day, so I was debating about signing up for the 25k option. Now I’m torn. All three races will have significant night time running, so either way, that’s a huge training plus for a 100.
