Hi, ive just completed my last long run of 31km in the Marathon Level 1 plan and started my taper.  I did the 31km at the top of Zone 2 pace (6:02/km).  Ive tried to find what my actual marathon race pace should be but I cant see anything (anywhere!) in the plan.

What should my target pace be for the race?  I just have no clue.

Have you looked in the race pacing section here:

I agree with Bstarr; this is a great place to understand your running plan.

    I hope that helps!

hi, thanks but it didnt really help!  Its my first marathon and all of that text still didnt answer me.  Surely the plan (AKA my coach) should help me decide my race pace?  Like, if my plan says to run all of my long runs in Z2 pace (which is exactly what it does say!) then is there not a guide on what I should be aiming for zone wise on race day?  The bar chart thing on the link for pacing goes from zone 2 to zone 3…but I dont know what my training indicates aiming for.  Sure I can go novice and be safe, which is what ill do in the absence of any otehr guide, and run my marathon at the same pace as I was running all of my long runs…but I think that sounds wrong no?  I should be running faster?  But how much faster?

Go very conservative in pacing. If you go out too fast, you will regret it by mile 15. Aiming for the top of zone 2 is a good place to start, but since it’s your first, this will be more of a learning experience on how your body will actually handle 26.2 miles.

The question about pace for race day arises quite a bit.   Perhaps this article will help a bit more than the previous one I posted:
