    Device: Garmin Forerunner 945
    Workout: RHR22 (Hill Repetitions Run)
    App: Stryd | Workout App

I’ve used 8020 in the past a few years ago for marathon training and reasonably familiar with the principles, but have recently returned to it more seriously for Triathlon using Power for running and cycling. Today I tried the RHR22 workout. I noted that the workout suggested pausing the Workout after the warmup and before the hill reps.

I knew where I wanted to do the hill reps and had a rough plan on timings so as to get there about the same time as the hill-rep section after 10 minutes of Z1 and Z2 warmup. As it was, I still had a long way to go so I stopped the Garmin until I reached the hill-rep area. I did this by pressing START/STOP button while following the workout in the Stryd Workout App. I continued (running ‘blind’ now) at what my RPE told me was about Z2 until the hill-reps area then resumed the workout.

When I looked later I could see where I’d paused and the map shows a straight line between the two points where I stopped/restarted the workout.

My question is, what is the best method for dealing with a situation where you’re not going to get to the place you’d planned for you’re next bit of the workout in time? Or how best to Pause a workout. I’m not sure what happens if I press Lap instead of Start/Stop in the Stryd app and I couldn’t find any documentation.

I should add this isn’t a big deal. I’m really just curious whether others have had this issue and how they deal with it. I really like the simplicity of the Stryd App (I appreciate this is probably more of Stryd App question than an 8020 question) and in future once I get more familiar with the workouts and best places to do them I’ll make sure I’m at Ground Zero earlier rather than later so that I can have a tidier map trace.

    hi Dougie,
I have to say I am not sure how to get around this with the Stryd App -as you mentioned this may be a question for that app specifically. I do know that there is an option in trainingPeaks to set your interval to not complete until you hit the lap button.
Here is the resource from TrainingPeaks that explains how to do that.

    Hi Dougie,

When you press the lap button in the Stryd Workout App it skips to the next segment; although there is no option to setup a segment “until lap button pressed” like in Training Peaks, my suggestion is to make the preceding interval long enough so that you can cut it short pressing lap when you’re ready for your repeats, or whatever comes next.

    I hope this helps! 🙂

Thank you both for replying to my query. Sorry for not acknowledging or replying to this. My training has been very untidy but I’m ready to get going again. I think Leyla’s suggestion about having an open-ended lap in the workout is exactly what I’m looking for ( https://help.trainingpeaks.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003385172 ). I will try it next time when I resume my plan.

Ah I see what you mean. I didn’t appreciate the distinction between doing a TP Garmin Workout and one in the Stryd Workout App. I modified the TP workout (RSP7) with Lap 2 on press, but I ended up out of synch. ( http://tpks.ws/67RWFTUGGLF2AFZ2G6L7JLSFPY ).

Next time I’ll try your suggestion of increasing the length of the preceding interval and see how I get on.
