Hi, been using the 8020 plans for a while, and next week will finish a 5k level 2 plan (heart rate based). I will then use this 5k to predict my zones for the following half-marathon plan.

I was hoping to try a power-based plan this time, but wondering whether there were any suggestions as to how well this works with a Stryd?

Also, as I go through the plan, and get faster, I would expect my Z2 power to increase (while my heart rate zone should stay constant). Is there any advice for how you manipulate the power zones through a plan? Should I do occasional 5k test runs once every three-week cycle to reset those?

Finally, there is the ‘talk test’ but I find that very difficult to decide what is correct here. Does anyone have a youtube video of a talk test recording to show how it should progress?

    Thanks

    HI,

8020 is specifcaly set up to work with Power (its the preferred metric) and Stryd. I have been using it for a while and it works a treat. If you want to convert your HR plan to a Power plan contact them and they will switch the HR plan to the equivilent power plan for free.

See here for instructions on how to use the Stryd https://support.stryd.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500005239442-How-do-I-use-80-20-Run-or-Triathlon-Plans-through-TrainingPeaks-with-Stryd- . Note that you need to disable stryd generating the autogenerated stryd power zones as described in the instructions as Stryd power zones and 8020 zones are diferent.

Regarding updating your zones – for all plans you do this every 2-3 weeks as described in the pages linked to in above guide. I do a Simultaneouse 20 minuite test that gives you Pace, HR and Power zones even though I only use Power as a metric. I do this as occasionaly the Power zones may not change but my Pace or HR will as I loose weight or get more efficient. So if my Power loks like it has not improved I can see changes else where.

Lastly – there is a new Stryd comming out (mine is due to arrive in a week or so). The old one is absolutley fine, so you may find a few turning up on ebay as people upgrade.

    Thanks,

Just disabled the auto CP calculation, does it matter what zones are defined in the Stryd app? Since they don’t match (i.e. Stryd doesn’t have a concept of X or Y zones) it’s not obvious how you’d transfer the updated power numbers.

Ah – I am assuming you are using Training Peaks and have linked Stryd App. If so then you have your training plan in Training Peaks and set up the zones in Training Peaks as discribed here https://www.8020endurance.com/understanding-trainingpeaks-workout-plan/. TP plans will sync with the Stryd Workout App that you need to download on your watch. Note that only the next week or so will be synced at any one time.

So it does not mater what zones you have set up in PowerCenter/Stryd App as the workouts are from Training Peaks.
