    Hi all,

My level 2 sprint triathlon plan is due to finish on 13th of August and I’ve signed up for my first marathon which will be on the 15th of October. This is a total of nine weeks between events.

How should I go about training for the marathon? I am quite comfortable with the level 2 plans as I have done several 70.3 level 2 plans over the past three years including one that finished on Sunday 21st of May.

Is nine weeks enough time to transition from sprint fitness to marathon? If so, what plan would be recommended please?

    Hi MH,

The peak week of your sprint level 2 plan will have you training just over 7 hours so that is a good base of aerobic fitness, your long run that week will be 90mins.. total run volume about 2 hours. If you selected the Level 1 Marathon plan then the volume for Week 9 (a transition week) will be about 4 and half hours, with the longest run being 90 mins. This would be a safe place to start if you plan to go all in on the marathon training and only do run training. If you are an injury prone runner then Level 1 is a good volume to start at and you can replace some runs with cross training to avoid any overload in the first few weeks of switching to the marathon plan.

    Hope that is helpful.

    Coach Leyla
