    Hi,

I’m going to train for my first half Marathon Level 1 and I am considering in using the free Strength Plan for it. However, I was wondering can you use normal gym classes as an alternative? My local gym have 30 mins kettlebell classes on Mondays and 30 mins Core Conditioning classes on Wednesdays. Would it make any difference if I do those classes instead of the strength training plans? Then I do foundation runs after those classes? The classes tend to do full body work out though so they don’t really focus on strength for running. By the way I also plan to do my regular Les Mills RPM on Saturday mornings so I think that kind of replaces the foundation run. Or I can go out for a run afterwards or later in the afternoon depending on my mood…

I don’t know all of the exercises in the 80/20 strength plan so I have been considering about hiring a personal trainer at my gym to show me the techniques but it’s a bit expensive.

    Hi G,

Some strength is better than no strength and I would say that the Kettlebell class and the core strength class would work well within the early phase of a half marathon training plan. The considerations you need to think about though are that your stand alone strength programs are not run specific, and are not periodized with your running plan (ie they are not designed to compliment your run training). So you may need to make some adjustments as the running volume increases particularly to the kettlebell classes.

I would also suggest considering the RPM class may replace one of your higher intensity run sessions, especially you find yourself fatigued come the Sunday long run.

Our premium strength plans may be a great option for you right now as they come with video instructions for every movement and email support with Dr AJ Gregg who designed the plans.

I’m a little late to this thread.

Hi, Leyla. Would these strength plans be optimized for use with the Masters Half Marathon plans? Particularly as it pertains to timing of the strength training to avoid clashing with hard workout days on the half marathon plan.

    Thanks!

    Hi MollyD,

Yes our strength plans are designed to work with our main distance plan. If you are doing a half marathon plan you purchase our 80/20 Running 15 week strength plan and apply it with the same start or end date as your half marathon plan to have the workouts line up.

    Cheers
