I just discovered that the lake where I do my open water swimming is open. I haven’t done any swimming since mid March. My first race, at the end of June, hasn’t been officially cancelled. It is a very small event and I think there’s a good chance it will actually happen. Logistically, I can probably only go to the lake once or twice a week. Distance and/or time based intervals don’t make a lot of sense to me in open water. Should I just go to the lake and work on endurance? I am using the Olympic Level 1 plan.

    Anna,

What timing! Check out this blog post that Matt just posted on this very topic: https://www.8020endurance.com/how-to-convert-pool-swim-workouts-to-open-water/

It’s almost as if Matt and I can read the future…

I’d perform the swim workouts in your plan as written (or as close as you can) using the tips in Matt’s blog to convert the workouts to open water.

    Jaun,

If you are just on the 4th week, go ahead and swim as listed in the plan, but don’t perform any of the intervals yet. Perform the distance of the workout as written, but just swim Zone 1-2. Let yourself use fins half the time for the next coupe of weeks, then about week 7 start adding in the speed intervals.
