Wearable for ventilatory threshold

    Hi Matt and all forum friends.

    I was wondering if any wearable that can track respiratory rate and thus tell us where we are in terms of VT1 and VT2 exists.

    I use a Oura ring: it measures my respiratory rate, but only at night and it only provides me with one night average. Oura says the ring estimates respiratory rate based on my HR reading, so I suppose any good running HR monitor should be able to measure respiratory rate.

    What do you know about the development of such technology/algorithm? Here in Singapore the weather is making my HR useless. On the other hand, I feel too inexperienced to train solely on RPE.

    That’s one of the problems with HR, it’s too easily affected by external things like the weather.
    Can you not use pace ?
    Or, if interested in wearables as you seem to be, have you looked at a stryd pod so you could run with power? that will solve these issues

    Hi Martin. Thanks for the reply.

    Indeed, I’m starting to ditch HR and use pace for faster workouts. But for long and steady Z2 I fear that I may end up above the aerobic threshold. I could slow down the pace even more and be conservative (MAF?), but you know how frustrating it is. I “accept” to run slow, but let me run as fast as possible within that aerobic zone.

    So my cry for a wearable is to allow me to be sure to train aerobically with peace of mind: look at one piece of data and run according. It was HR, but VT would probably be better.

    Hi Matt, thank you. I did not know this tyme wear: interesting! I’m not sure I’m as serious as to be ready to pay 200$ for it. It would certainly be an interesting experiment.

    I’ve just had a crazy idea: without going into the complexity of continuous monitoring, recording and broadcasting respiratory rate to our gps watches, what is your opinion about checking respiratory rate during runs with a simple oximeter? It’d be a way to keep our LSD runs under VT1 using data and a relatively cheap serviice. Would it be reliable?

    Interesting question. I didn’t know the answer off the top of my head, but my first thought was that if it were viable, it would already be a thing. So, I did some searching and found that validation studies done in the ’90s found poor reliability:
