ParticipantAfter I do a run and cycling test, get updated numbers (in this example, it’s an increased cycling FTP), and proceed to enter that new FTP in TrainingPeaks to set up new zones for my structured power workouts, with the power-based maintenance plan already on my calendar for upcoming weeks, I am finding that why TrainingPeaks updates the power zones for the workouts in TrainingPeaks, those updated zones don’t make it all the way to my Garmin Edge 830… I have about 5 weeks of upcoming workouts sync’d from TP to my Edge and they have the old, outdated zones for the workouts. And they don’t get updated… I have waiting several days and they haven’t been auto fixed. What is the easiest way to fix this problem? I have found one solution which is to change the workout “type” in TP from Bike to “Day Off” and save it, then go change it back from Day Off to Bike. It seems like the problem emanates from the situation where a workout is already loaded on to the Edge, then it doesn’t get updated with new power targets on the device if the power zones are updated in TrainingPeaks. Anyone else seeing this problem? Any easier solutions than the tedious solution I found with changing the type one by one, or deleting and re-adding each workout from my workout library one by one? Thanks for the tips!
P.S. This isn’t much of a problem for me with runs after a new run test and new rFTP because, using the Stryd app on my Garmin 945, it only adds a couple of days at a time to the device so it’s quite easy to delete and reload the one or two days that might be old zones that are already on the watch.

KeymasterTed,
This is a known and annoying bug in TP that we address in our document Understanding Your TrainingPeaks Structured Workout Plan, the relevant section is below:
Q: My thresholds recently changed, and I updated my 80/20 zones in TrainingPeaks using the instructions in this document. The workouts on my device still display the old zones. Why?
A: Depending on the device, TrainingPeaks will sync up to several weeks of workouts at a time to Garmin Connect, Zwift, or Wahoo. Those workouts contain your custom 80/20 zones at the time the sync took place. Updating zones in TrainingPeaks does not trigger a new sync, so the old zones remain on your device. To force a new sync, the workouts must be removed and re-added using one of the following methods:
– Use the Shift feature in the TrainingPeaks calendar (click on the triple horizontal lines found by hovering over a given day or week in the calendar and choose Shift) and shift your plan from today forward by one week. Wait for that change to reflect in the 3rd party calendar, then shift the workouts back to their original dates in TrainingPeaks.
– Cut a given workout(s) off of the calendar, wait for that change to reflect in the 3rd party calendar, then paste the workouts back to their original dates in TrainingPeaks.
– Unapply the entire plan in TrainingPeaks, wait for that change to reflect in the 3rd party calendar, then reapply the entire plan.
These actions lead TrainingPeaks to consider the affected workouts to be “new” workouts and force a re-sync to the 3rd party, which then sends your updated zones to your device.

ParticipantThanks, David. Sounds like SHIFT is my savior!

ParticipantCircling back on this, many weeks (and sync’d workouts later), with a dozen attempts, in my current step cycling, I found sadly that the Shift action did not update the power zones in the workout on my Garmin Edge. I have no idea why. I deleted all workouts on my device, shifted all of today and future workouts out 2 months, sync’d so no workouts were on the Edge, and no scheduled items at all on the Training Calendar of the device, then shifted the workouts back, bringing today’s workout back to today, and pulling the workout up on the Edge it has my old power zones, not my new ones. I wish there were either an automated way the update propogated, or a way to handle multiple days at a time (like the shift solution seemed to do for me earlier) but it looks like I have to resort to changing the workout type in TrainingPeaks from Bike to Day Off and then back to Bike for each workout manually. Anyone else having this trouble? Any other ideas?

ParticipantAlso, I am building each week of the training plan from the book, and since TrainingPeaks doesn’t allow athletes to create and save training plans, I can not unapply and reapply the training plan. Come to think of it, that was a difference between November and now for me. In November I was using the 80/20 Maintenance Training Plan hosted on TrainingPeaks. Now I am building each week of 70.3 Level 2 from the book. Wonder if that makes a difference in the Shift solution – it had seemed to work for me in Nov-January with the Maintenance Plan.

Keymasterted,
The key step here is to wait until the Garmin Connect calendar reflects the changes. Do the shift feature, wait until Garmin Connect shows the same new dates, then shift back. This confirms that GC has synced the updated workouts and has packaged up the new zones as part of the sync. Also, you’ll want to make sure that the Workout Details reflect your new zones to confirm that TP is sending those new zones.
Should have nothing to do with the plan, other than the 70.3 plan has a lot more workouts than the Maintenance plan. Maybe it takes longer to trigger a sync to GC with a larger plan.
If this still does not work, report it to TrainingPeaks. It’s a annoying bug regardless if the shift feature works or not and the more we complain about it the more they will consider fixing it. In fact, even if it does work, complain to TP so they’ll fix the root cause!

ParticipantI tried the Shift trick again. Sync between TP and GC seems just about instantaneous. I confirmed in GC there were no workouts in the next few weeks on the GC Calendar. Then I shifted all workouts back to the correct days. I think sync’d the Garmin Edge. Still has old zones for all of the upcoming workouts on the Edge.
I wrote up a description of this problem and submitted it to both Garmin and TrainingPeaks. Doubt we’ll see anything productive on this before 2022. In the meantime I will keep my calendar loaded with only a single step cycle at a time and then either do the Day Off trick or recopy from my Workout Library when I need to force a zone update.

ParticipantI’m a little confused though. How is this not a problem experienced by EVERY Garmin owning 80/20 triathlete? Isn’t everyone testing their fitness and getting updated zones every 3 or 6 weeks? Is anybody else noticing the problem I have had once they change their zones?

Keymasterted, sorry for the hassle. I know you understand that this is not an 80/20 issue, but for the rest of the forums, this is completely a TP>Garmin sync problem.
You’re right, it’s a common issue. However, I’ve probably had close to 100 athletes report this issue to me and this is the first time those steps have been reported to not work. Just to make sure: you’ve confirmed that the Workout Details in TP reflect the new zones, yes? Otherwise, you’re just re-syncing the same zones over and over.
Here’s the nuclear option that absolutely should work, and probably similar to what TP will have you do:
1. Delete all workouts from the device, in the Workouts folder on the device. I understand you can’t access that folder on a Mac, but this issue is the catalyst to find a PC to manage that device. I can’t imagine not being able to access my device as a USB and successfully train, I use that USB feature all the time. Don’t delete the Activities, delete the Workouts on your device.
2. Perform the shift function and shift by 52 weeks, an entire year. This will ensure that there is nothing further that is going to sync to your Garmin.
3. Wait 24 hours.
4. Confirm that GC calendar is 100% clear for the next year.
5. Re-confirm that the Workouts folder on the device is empty.
6. Shift the workouts back 52 weeks to the correct dates.
I don’t like the use the word “impossible” but it’s incredibly unlikely that the issue will continue after these steps. We’re clearing out the GC calendar, clearing out the Workouts folder.
But, what if those workouts are corrupted? Meaning, there is something in them that can’t re-sync the new zones? That’s possible. Limiting the number of workouts you plan out at a time, as you propose, should limit the issue.
The only better option than the 52-week shift is to delete the workouts from TP completely by unapplying and reapplying the entire plan. However, I understand you are writing these workouts individually from the book and don’t have a complete plan to unapply and reapply.

ParticipantI can confirm the workout details in TrainingPeaks for future structured workouts are correctly adjusted to the new FTP. The workouts on my Edge have the old zones. Garmin Connect (app and web) don’t show any specific details about the structure of the workout and don’t display the power zones, just the workout description. I am able to delete all Workouts on the device by going to the Workouts menu on the device and selecting Delete All. Anyway, yes, this is a problem with TrainingPeaks and Garmin clearly, not a 80/20 Endurance problem, and I have a few ways to work around the problem to have an accurate set of zones on my device for an upcoming workout. I don’t need to beat a dead horse. If anyone comes learns anything new on this feel free to share but I won’t gripe about this here any more. Just came back to this yesterday because it was the first time that the “Shift” trick no longer worked for me and that was new info for the forum.

ParticipantGarmin and TrainingPeaks are both aware of this bug. Seems like the problem is on tbt TP side (well, according to Garmin that is.) TrainingPeaks just sent me this message.

KeymasterTed,
This “bugs” me. If you are willing, I’m willing to dig in a bit further myself. If you can allow me temporary access to your Garmin Connect account (change your password temporarily), and also attached your TP account to me at https://home.trainingpeaks.com/attachtocoach?sharedKey=OKYJVWHNFAPPG I’ll duplicate and test some items out as well.
